I am just smitten over these two and their GORGEOUS engagement session up in Forest Falls! We spent the evening hiking through fields of little white flowers, crossing several creeks and rivers, and nestled in bumble bee central up in the raspberry farms of Oak Glen. It was a perfect summer afternoon spent capturing their love story! My favorite thing is when couples tell me they aren’t photogenic or they are really awkward in front of the camera, but then they show up to a shoot and are totally adorable and gorgeous and we just have such a great time hanging out that they don’t feel awkward or uncomfortable at all. My passion is to bring out the true love between people in photographs and these two had it in abundance! How cute are they!?
Julia and Miles are getting married next year at the same wedding venue Kyle and I got married at and I am so excited to celebrate their big day with them. They are such a fun couple with great taste and gorgeous smiles! Congrats on your engagement guys, I can’t wait to see your families grow!
How did you meet?
Miles: It was your typical movie where the guy falls in love with the boss’ daughter. I had been working for her mom for about six months on a large project. After finishing our project, her mom (or my boss) took our group out to lunch to celebrate the completion of the project. As we are leaving for lunch to Fratellino’s Italian restaurant, Julia called her mom to ask her a question. She answered Julia’s question and when Julia heard we were going to Fratellino’s (her favorite restaurant), Julia squeezed herself into free lunch and was told to meet us there. I had no knowledge that Julia would be meeting us for lunch until we got to the restaurant. I didn’t know much about Julia besides that she was a nurse. Her mom never really talked about her to me awhile at work. Julia met us at the restaurant to get her free lunch from her mom and the first thought i had about her was, “She is cute, but i knew she was the boss’ daughter so needed to stay cool.” (Now she tells the story here a little different). During lunch she and I spent most of the time talking and i realized we had a lot in common and she was smart, pretty, educated and simply amazing. After the lunch, i didn’t say much afterwards to anyone but i wanted to talk to her more even though she was the boss’ daughter. Since i wasn’t able to get her number because her mom was there, i found her on Facebook and added her about 2 days later. Half a day later after that, I reached out through Facebook to talk to her. We spent the rest of the day and night talking about all kinds of things: star wars, Disney, avengers and later asked her to a movie. Finding time with her nurse schedule was a little hard but we met up for a late movie and that was the start.
Julia: We actually met through my mom, who had no intention of setting us up! While Miles was a student worker at Cal State Fullerton, she was his boss (yes, he fell for the boss’s daughter, haha!) They were working on a project together, and when the project ended, he was also promoted to work full time at the Cal State Fullerton Irvine Center. To say thank you and congratulations, my mom decided to take him out to lunch. Coincidentally, I called her in that moment because I was looking for something at the house. It got brought up that she was out to lunch, so I invited myself because I wanted free food! I ran out the door with no makeup, a tshirt, and jeans thinking “it’s just my mom and her student, no one to impress.” As soon as I walked into the restaurant and came to find out, my mom was sitting across from an extremely attractive Miles, dressed up in his business casual. After talking and finding out he was going to be working in a different location, I figured I may as well just be my nerdy self since I would never see him again. I guess he found me to be cute, because a few days later he found me on facebook, messaged me, and asked me on a date. The rest is history!
How did you know she/he was the one?
Miles: I remember we were dating for about four months and i remember I was talking about some type of nerdy thing, either video games, cars or some type of useless knowledge. And this was someone who was cute, smart, educated, and goal driven and they were listening to me go on and on about some useless knowledge and accepted me and my secret weird side. I remember in that moment this is someone i wanted to keep in my life forever.
Julia: I knew he was the one because of his thoughtfulness, patience, and unending love he shows me everyday. He always does little things to surprise me, to show he cares, or to just make life easier. He’ll bring home flowers and desserts for special holidays (Valentine’s, anniversaries, etc.) despite the fact that he works late. He’ll do chores around the house (especially the ones that I dont like to do!) without a single complaint. We will always end every conversation and every night by saying “I love you.” He is my best friend, my shoulder to cry on, my sounding board for venting my issues to, and my adviser when I get into difficult conversations. We laugh together, and get through hard times together. I can’t picture my life without him.
How did he propose?
Miles: We were scheduled to go to a flying lanterns festival, which has been one of Julia bucket list items. So i planned to combine one of her bucket list items and the propose into one thing. I enlisted her best friend and husband in on it to help assist and distract her during the event to help keep it a surprise. They would also be helping me sneak the ring and propose during the event. Well unfortunately things didn’t go to plan. Three days before the event was to happen, the event got canceled due to high winds. This left me to come up with a back up plan in three days because i wasn’t going to wait for it to be rescheduled. So I enlisted more help, my mom and dad and her mom and dad plus her best friend and husband. The plan was now todistract her during the same Saturday we were suppose to go to the event with a number of different little things. The excuse was that the four of us all had the day off and planned to do something so lets do something. While we were out distracting her, both of our parents were secretly decorating Julia’s parents house with a flying lanterns theme. I figured if we couldn’t go to the flying lanterns, I’d bring it to her. So the four of us drove around LA and went to Descanso Gardens for the majority of the day. Later going to a Bunny Museum and then grabbing dinner. We made an excuse to be able to stop be Julia’s parents house, which was on the way house for the four of us. What she didn’t know was that there was a sneak party decorating the house and setting up the surprise. As we got to the house and approached the front door, i made an excuse to go back to the car but really i ran to the backyard. She made her way to the backyard where i was waiting to propose.
Julia: That’s actually a funny story! He had it all planned out that he would propose at the Lights festival in Barstow. I was suspicious something would happen, since a few people around us kind of let it slip. However, the Lights festival got cancelled at the last minute! Obviously, I was crushed. I had always wanted to see them, and I also thought “knowing how patient he is, he’ll probably wait until the next big event!” Little did I know, he had another plan in motion. My best friend and her husband (who we were supposed to go to the festival with) convinced us to go to Descanso gardens with them, since we still had the day free. After walking around the gardens, we went to the Bunny museum (Miles and I are bunny lovers) and went to dinner in LA. After dinner, they somehow got me to go to my parents’ house for “dessert.” Upon arriving, I noticed the house was dark. When I knocked on the door, my mom answered and I saw lanterns lit up everywhere in the house, making a pathway to the backyard. In the backyard, Miles was there waiting for me with a bouquet of flowers. He said a speech (I was so excited/happy I didn’t even process it!), got down on his knee, and before he could even ask the question I said “yes! Yes! Of course!” After the big reveal, i saw that his parents were also there! It was a magical night. It was so much better than the original plan, because I got to share the beautiful moment with my friends and family.
Why did you choose your venue?
We were exploring venues on The Knot, and we knew we wanted something unique and woodsy. Miles’ dad suggested we look at areas like Lake Arrowhead, and we entered that into our search bar. We found Pine Rose Lodge, and immediately fell in love. The pictures of the archway and forest surrounding the venue was out a fairytale. We also loved the all inclusive packages that came with the venue, as we were keen on making this whole planning process as stress free as possible. We booked our first tour, and though the winter was still lingering on site, we knew this was where we were supposed to get married. On the drive home from our tour, we called and booked the venue. Pine rose was the only venue we toured, and we loved it so much, we didnt feel like we needed to look anywhere else!
Why did you choose Whimsie Studios to photograph your wedding day?
During our venue tour, Kim showed us the portfolios of all the photographers that came with our package. As soon as I opened Whimsie Studio’s portfolio, I felt the same feeling I did when I tried on the right wedding dress: this was the photographer I had to have, and I didnt need to search for anyone else. I had an emotional response to the style, lighting, and ethereal quality to Whimsie Studio’s photography. Miles felt the same! After Instagram stalking, I made sure i messaged Sadi after we put our first deposit down. We were so happy we got her right away!
What was your engagement photoshoot experience like?
The day of the photoshoot, we were running around like crazy! We were also a little nervous; we weren’t sure if we were going to be awkward in front of the camera (normally we are), or if we were going to be comfortable, since we don’t usually show too much affection in public. However, our location for the photo shoot was so beautiful, and Sadi made us feel so at ease. We were able to be natural (after a few minutes of stiffness), with a beautiful setting filled with flowers, trees, and a mountain view as a background. We even got to shoot in the middle of a raspberry bush surrounded by thousands of bees (no one got stung in the process!) Throughout the entire time, we were able to really connect with each other and created our own little world.
What did you like most about working with me?
Working with Sadi was awesome! She truly put us at ease and made us feel comfortable. Right off the bat, we could tell that she knew exactly what she was doing. She knew how to pose us, what angle to shoot us from (so we’d look skinny haha!), and what she wanted us to look like. She was so easy to talk to, and it felt like we had been working with her forever, even though we just met her that day! She brought so much professionalism and knowledge to our shoot that we were never once concerned about how we looked. Thank you so much, Sadi! You are so talented and so easy to work with!
What are you most excited for on your wedding day?
Miles: I get to marry my best friend at a beautiful venue in front of our family and friends.
Julia: I’m so excited for all the beautiful little moments that happen at a wedding. For all the people that I get to share this special day with. Above all, I am the most excited to marry the man of my dreams, and the love of my life!
